Travelling back east after the first tour stop in Indian Wells, CA, players gathered at the picturesque Westchester Country Club for the second event. This was the eighth year of the Greenwich event and to kick off the weekend, participants attended a fun and lively meet and greet cocktail party at the magnificent home of Dani and Ted Virtue.
On Saturday afternoon during lunch, participants and guests were treated to an exhibition featuring Teymuraz Gabashvili, currently a top 50 ranked singles player in the world competing against a Westchester CC member, Will Blumberg. Will, 18 years old, was ranked 4 in the world in the under eighteens last year. The first 2 rounds of the tennis pro/am then followed with Larry Leeds/Ashley Fisher, Bob Bales/Rick Leach, David Salzman/Guillermo Canas and Marie Bernstein/Teymuraz Gabashvili all leading the pack going in to Sunday’s play.
Following the matches, players and their guests gathered at the home of host Lisa Torell and Mark Finerman. Guests dined under the stars at the Finerman’s beautiful estate with the picturesque, rolling hills of Greenwich in the background.
As predicted, the weather gods were not in favor of outside play the following day, consequently everyone gathered at the Rye Racquet Club for their final match. Our two finals featured David Salzman, in his first appearance, playing with the legendary Guillermo Canas against Marie Bernstein and hard hitting Teymuraz Gabashvili. David and Guillermo went on to claim their first title in a close two set match.
In the second final, Greenwich resident and longtime PCF tour competitor, Larry Leeds, and Ashley Fisher went up against the indomitable combination of Bob Bales and doubles legend, Rick Leach. Yet again, Bob and Rick proved how tough they are to defeat, beating Larry and Ashley and moving forward for the second year in a row.
Congratulations to the winners and finalists! Both matches featured exceptionally entertaining tennis for all of the spectators.
The leader board shows Marie Bernstein as the sole leader, followed by Fernando Sartorius, Bob Bales and Dick Merkin. The updated tour points determined from the results of this event can be viewed on the leader board.
On behalf of Prostate Cancer Foundation, I would like to take this opportunity to thank The Charles Evans Foundation, the PCF Pro/Am players and donors. Also, a special thanks to Lisa Torell and Mark Finerman, Dani and Ted Virtue, D.J. Gaetz and The Westchester Country Club, as well as all of our sponsors: Movado, Alerion and Babolat.
