After players competed in Indian Wells, CA the tour returned for the fourth year to Greenwich and the spectacular, historic Westchester Country Club. Again, Dani and Ted Virtue welcomed players, donors and their guests to their beautiful home for the meet and greet player party. The gracious hosts provided a fabulous cocktail party for all, another great kick-off for the weekend!
On Saturday morning, multiple Grand Slam Doubles Champions Don Johnson, Stephen Huss, Richey Reneberg and Ellis Ferreira proved to everyone what it takes to win a grand slam title with an entertaining doubles exhibition during the lunch barbeque. Players then took to the courts for the first 2 rounds followed by yet another spectacular theme party at the magnificent residence of David Kabiller. David hosted a “Studio 54” theme cleverly designed as a throw back to the ‘70’s disco era. All guests arrived in their favorite flashback disco attire from the era and walked the red carpet into the completely transformed night club scene. The packed event enjoyed a strolling dinner with every food imaginable, desserts and champagne after which guests either danced the night away on the multi-level Studio 54 replica dance floor or relaxed in the VIP lounges off stage. Oh what a night!
On Sunday morning the WCC ladies were treated to a clinic orchestrated by Don Johnson and Ellis Ferreira. The women were provide with an informative hour of video analysis, instruction, drills and tennis tips by the ex grand slam champions. Following lunch, tour players collected at the courts and prepared for the final day of the event. In the two featured title matches, Dani Virtue and Graydon Oliver attempted to win their first tournament title by taking on Jay Comerford and Mihai Nichifor. Dani, bravely battling with a very bad knee injury, and Graydon unfortunately lost the match to Jay and Mihai. We all wish Dani a speedy recovery with her knee injury.
The second final between Dani’s husband, Ted Virtue and teammate Vince Spadea vs. John Lehmann along with Wayne Ferreira also proved to be an entertaining and exciting contest. All four players provided fans with spectacular tennis, both Wayne and Vince showing everyone why they were top 20 singles players, Wayne with a 6-7 career head to head record against Sampras and Vince defeating Agassi, Courier and Sampras. Ted and Vince, last year’s finalists, emerged victorious winning the title after a great match.
Congratulations to the winners and finalists! Both matches featured exceptionally entertaining tennis for all of the spectators.
