In 1929 Westchester Country Club opened in the rolling hills outside New York City, offering some of the finest facilities for sports and socializing on the Eastern seaboard, a superb tennis compound among them. Back in the day, grass courts were the mark of the most prestigious clubs. Today the mystique of a pristine grass surface endures, and Westchester Country Club continues to be among the few clubs to preserve this distinctive tennis tradition, protecting and maintaining five beautifully manicured grass courts.
The tennis season at the club begins in April, and runs through the month of September. The grass courts, however, open Memorial Day weekend with play allowed by our membership four days a week (as weather allows) and close soon after Labor Day. In addition, the club facility offers fifteen superbly conditioned Har-Tru courts along with a half court and backboard. There is also one hard surface tennis court at the beach club used primarily for day campers.
Our current tennis director, Bid Goswami, oversees an outstanding instruction program for the membership with top-notch assistant professionals on staff. The spring season kicks off with five ladies’ teams in MITL and HVL competition and junior after-school clinics. The summer junior tennis program offers the club children a full range of instruction from the newest youngsters to those skilled players competing in USTA tournaments, and on high school and collegiate teams.
Our professional staff works closely with the Tennis Committee to sponsor club championships for adults and children, along with more casual formats like an evening men’s league and a weekend mixed doubles round-robin. The pro shop is fully stocked with high quality apparel – “tennis whites” as per our dress code! – along with accessories and equipment.
