After completing the first tour event in Indian Wells, CA, competitors returned to the east coast for tournament number two. This year the location was switched to the spectacular, historic Westchester Country Club. On Friday evening Dani and Ted Virtue welcomed everyone at their wonderful home for the meet and greet player party. The beautiful setting and delectable food proved to be the perfect setting for the participants to reunite in preparation for the big weekend!
On Saturday morning, multiple Grand Slam Doubles Champion Rick Leach and former top-ranked touring pro Jeff Tarango provided the Westchester Country Club juniors with an informative hour of instruction, drills and tennis tips. Following the clinic, a large crowd of spectators collected for a barbeque while entertained by Tommy Lasorda and his hilarious stories of the past. Johan Kriek, Jimmy Arias and the Jensen brothers, Luke and Murphy, then treated fans and spectators to a highly entertaining exhibition match on the grass courts of the Westchester Country Club. After lunch, teams took to the courts for the first day of play followed by what had to be one of the Greenwich parties of the Summer at the magnificent residence of David Kabiller. Mr. Kabiller hosted a Roaring 20’s theme cleverly designed to resemble The Great Gatsby. All guests attended the fete in attire from the bygone era and were greeted by men in zoot suits and ladies in flapper dresses to set the tone. The huge turnout, all in proper 20’s garb, from gangsters, to flappers to baseball legends, celebrated the theme by enjoying a strolling dinner and desserts of superfluous delights while sipping champagne. The cigar lounge and casino, complete with vintage ports, were indulged upon before ending the evening with the ever popular Charleston dance. What a night!
Following lunch on Sunday, tour players collected at the courts and prepared for the final day of the event. In the two featured title matches, Sam Herzberg and his regular partner, Jonathan Schneider, attempted to win their first tournament of the year by taking on Tom Virtue and Jimmy Arias, a rematch of last year's final! Tom, one of the favorite personalities of the Westchester tournament, with pro partner, Jimmy, a champion in 2009 and former fourth ranked singles player in the world, unfortunately lost an extremely close match to Sam and Jonathan, a former tour player on the ATP.
The second final between Ted Virtue and teammate Vince Spadea vs. Joel Pashcow along with Don Johnson also proved to be an entertaining and exciting contest. All four players provided fans with spectacular tennis, Don Johnson proving to everyone why he’s won both the Wimbledon and Australian doubles titles and Vince Spadea showing spectators the form that produced singles victories over Federer, Agassi and Sampras.
Congratulations to the winners and finalists! Both matches featured exceptionally entertaining tennis for all of the spectators.
The leader board shows Joel Pashcow holding his lead after back to back victories followed by Sam Herzberg and Narendra Singh. The updated tour points determined from the results of this event can be viewed on the leader board.
